Cameroonian Mercy Miyang Tembon was promoted to Vice President and Corporate Secretary of the World Bank Group

[CamerExcellence] – This is another excellent pride for Cameroon. “World Bank Country Director in Bangladesh Mercy Tembon has been promoted to Vice President and Corporate Secretary of the World Bank Group. She will join Washington DC’s World Bank Group headquarters on September 1. A Cameroonian national, Mercy Miyang Tembon has been serving as a country director for both Bangladesh and Bhutan since June 30, 2019. Her three-year tenure will expire on August 31,” reported Bangladesh Post on August 5, 2022.

In a video post published today (August 23, 2022) on Twitter, Mercy Tembon confirmed that information and said that her stay in Bangladesh had been remarkably special. She said she will miss Bangladeshi cultural heritage, its cuisine and its traditional jamdani sarees that she loves too much. “I will also miss the wonderful colleagues in the Dhaka Office. In addition to being the driving force behind the largest ongoing IDA program globally, they have been my family in Bangladesh”, she said.

So, from September 1, 2022, Mercy Miyang Tembon will serve as Vice President and Corporate Secretary of the World Bank Group at the World Bank Group headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Prior to taking this position, she was the World Bank’s Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan, since July 1, 2019.

Dr Mercy Tembon is an enthusiastic and seasoned international development professional with over 30 years of experience working in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. She is also a Lifetime Board member of the Parents’ National Education Union Nursery and Primary School, Bamenda Cameroon, which she founded in 1989.

She fosters an environment that values creativity and analytic thinking

She has extensive managerial, operational, and field experience engaging actors at various levels to develop priorities upstream and institutionalize positive achievements downstream. She leads cross-functional teams and fosters an environment that values creativity and analytic thinking to solve development-related challenges.

She oversees a large portfolio of projects, technical assistance and financial resources worth more than $15 billion to promote economic growth and social development in the countries she works in. She has a strong client orientation, she is results-driven, and has excellent diplomatic, interpersonal and communications skills.

She enjoys the trust and confidence of governments and other stakeholders and works effectively with clients and development partners. She motivates her staff to achieve goals and produce impactful results.

Dr Mercy Miyang Tembon brings to her new role deep knowledge of Bank operations, a track record in promoting economic growth and social development in several countries, and a reputation for developing strong partnerships with stakeholders.

She also brings a unique combination of experiences working at the country and sector levels, coupled with the extensive multicultural experience of living in different countries and working in several languages.

A Cameroonian national, Dr Mercy Miyang Tembon joined the World Bank in 2000 as an Education Specialist and has since held leadership positions in different countries.

Prior to taking this assignment, Dr Mercy Miyang Tembon served as the Country Director for the South Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia) in the Europe and Central Asia region. She also served as World Bank Country Manager for Burundi as well as for Burkina Faso in the Africa region.

Dr Mercy Miyang Tembon holds a PhD in Economics of Education from the University of London, England. Prior to joining the World Bank, she was a Research Officer at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. She has authored several publications on education, gender, and economic growth issues.

In her role as the World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan, Dr Mercy Miyang Tembon has led the implementation of the World Bank Group’s Country Partnership Framework in support of the development priorities of both countries. She also led the policy dialogue with government counterparts, civil society, and other stakeholders to achieve country development goals.

Dr Mercy Tembon is a recipient of many teams and individual awards – notably the World Bank Group Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Award in 2010, and the WBG Staff Association’s Excellence in Leadership Awards (ELA) in 2014. She speaks English, French and Meta.
